Grant Guidelines


The Vision of the Jefferson Trust: To allow great ideas at the University of Virginia to come to fruition and demonstrate the powerful benefits of donor-led, university-based grantmaking.

The Mission of the Jefferson Trust: To foster a dynamic community of alumni and friends of the University of Virginia who provide catalytic grants in support of innovation and leadership. This donor-led initiative invests in people whose efforts can have a positive impact on the student experience, the University community, or society at large.

All proposals must meet the following guidelines

  1. Positive impact on the student experience, the University community, or society at large
  2. Encourages innovation and/or leadership
Applicant Status Guidelines
We DO fund: We DON’T fund:
Proposals from UVA faculty, administrators, University-related organizations, and students/student groups. (Student groups must have clear leadership transition plans in place.) Proposals from organizations not related to the University of Virginia, or not for the benefit of UVA.
Timeline Guidelines
We DO fund: We DON’T fund:
Single events; single year timelines; and multi-year timelines (up to three years). Multi-year timelines where subsequent year budgets are unknown.
Seed Funding Guidelines
We DO fund: We DON’T fund:
  • Early-stage/startup funds
  • Exceptional one-offs (single, high-impact event)
Ongoing operating costs or recurring annual expenses
Travel Expense Guidelines
We DO fund: We DON’T fund:
Travel expenses for bringing experts to UVA where they can have high community impact. Sending a small group from UVA to another location is less likely to be funded, but this can vary based on importance to the project.
“Brick & Mortar”-type Proposal Guidelines
We DO fund: We DON’T fund:
Capital expenses tied to other objectives (such as study spaces or furnishing learning lab equipment). Straightforward capital improvements.
Budget Detail Guidelines
We DO fund: We DON’T fund:
Compensation/wages, when needed to carry out the program. Can pay:

  • Student workers
  • Faculty release
  • Program coordinators
  • Research leads
Salaries for:

  • Existing positions due to budget issues
  • New positions denied in University budgeting process

Please Note:

  • The Trust seeks to have an impact in all areas of the University; therefore we take into consideration grant patterns from recent years to ensure equitable distribution across schools/areas.
  • The Trust seeks a balance of international, national, state, local and UVA community impact projects within the confines of proposals submitted. However, the primary beneficiaries of these projects must be UVA-related rather than sole benefit to an outside entity or population.
