This project provides undergraduates a truly unique learning-by-doing experience that transcends traditional borders of knowledge. It bridges the divide between arts and science, reflection and action, UVA and the world off-Grounds. Through personal and public exploration of key moments in our environmental history, students deepen understanding of how the US has led the world in safeguarding our climate. Students study the development of climate science since the 19th century and track the evolution of environmental policy as the science matured. Then, students develop interactive experiences of key texts (‘engagement experiments’) to share with our community on grounds and in Charlottesville high schools. Melding experiment with performance art, students guide others through our climate story, ultimately curating a series of art shows based on these shared experiences.
