The project created a digital variorum edition of Thomas Jefferson’s “Notes on the State of Virginia” that brought together the following: 1. Full-color scans of Jefferson’s personal copy (one of the treasures in UVA’s Albert Small Special Collections Library), 2. Scans from presentation copies of the “Notes” inscribed by Jefferson to Lafayette and others (also in the Small Special Collections Library), as well as, 3. Images of Jefferson’s manuscript, currently housed in the Massachusetts Historical Society. These multiple digital facsimiles accompanied by a fully annotated reading text; and this digital variorum edition, designed from the outset to be consumed through the iPad and other ebook readers, preserved and promoted the Jefferson legacy in rich intertextual multimedia. Imagined by UVa faculty and graduate students for UVa undergraduates and other nonspecialist readers, the digital edition opened our specialist archives to a wider audience of readers and demonstrate the spirit of innovation that is alive and well at the University of Virginia these two hundred years on.
