Project Spotlight

The Symposium on the Tibetan Book

The Symposium on the Tibetan Book will be an unprecedented two-day event bringing together scholars from both Bibliographic Studies and Tibetan Studies to discuss the development, implementation, and benefits of Tibetan Bibliography. Tibetan scholars at the University of Virginia have not been trained to study the physical aspects of Buddhist books, an oversight which leaves important evidence unexamined and unutilized in reconstructing the literary history of the Tibetan plateau. During this two-day long symposium, scholars working on projects related to the production and analysis of Tibetan books from research institutions across the country will be invited to present their research while discussing the contours and considerations of the newly-forming field of Tibetan Bibliography.
