Teaching Methods Course for Engineering TAs

The Applied Math department (APMA) provides courses to all engineering students and recently redesigned many of their courses to incorporate active learning strategies. Undergraduate peer leaders (PLs) and graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) are used to support these classrooms, and we propose one-credit hour teaching methods courses for these PLs and GTAs to learn methods for interacting with students during class. The goal of this proposal is to: 1) develop a teaching methods course that will improve student learning and retaining a diverse group of students in engineering disciplines, and 2) create a model to develop and expand teaching courses in engineering. The course will engage PLs and GTAs in understanding both theoretical and practical aspects of teaching, and it will influence thousands of undergraduate students each semester through improved instructional practice of 30 ~ 40 TAs.
