Project Spotlight

Pavilion Seminars

The project reinvigorated the undergraduate experience by launching a new curricular initiative called the Pavilion Seminars. These courses increased the opportunities for our students to engage closely with our most distinguished faculty; to struggle with ideas and challenges shaping the world in which we live; to consider issues from multiple perspectives stretching beyond disciplinary boundaries; and to acquire the skills of making and critiquing arguments, conducting analysis, and applying critical thinking so essential to their future success. This initiative recaptured the spirit of the liberal arts education that Jefferson envisioned in the Academical Village by teaching seminars in Pavilions on the Lawn, limited in size to a dozen students to fifteen and led only by the College’s most distinguished faculty.
