Project Spotlight

Mass Spectrometer as Undergraduate Research Topic

The project constructed a novel type of a mass spectrometer. Its design and construction was a main topic of research for undergraduate and graduate students. The mass spectrometer was used (1) as a new experiment in the intermediate lab course of the physics department. Inclusion of the spectrometer in the intermediate lab represented an important update, needed to ensure that students were familiar with the newest technologies. (2) The mass spectrometer was used as a ultra-stable proton source for a fundamental physics experiment. Students used the protons to calibrate a particle detector.
