Project Spotlight

Body Positive at UVa

The grant benefited the University culture in two significant ways: 1) providing education and outreach to students to address this epidemic of disordered behavior and 2) providing the University an opportunity to pioneer significant ways to impact this nationally prevalent issue. The Women’s Center Eating Disorders Education Initiative (EDEI) conducts an evidence-based body image intervention with groups of first year women, provides powerful educational outreach and referrals for UVA students, coordinates efforts with pan-University organizations, and manages eating disorders-related resources available to the UVA students and community members. The Initiative works to prevent new cases of eating disorders and help those who have disordered behaviors so that they can have improved health outcomes and quality of life.  EDEI promotes a body positive community at UVA where everyone enjoys a healthy relationship with food and exercise and acceptance of a positive body image.
